vintage Rolex Datejust

Investing in an affordable Rolex : still the king of the pre-owned market.

Rolex Air-King date 5700 / 5700NRolex is the most recognisable wristwatch in the world. I’m fairly sure that every self-professed expert at the bar or at your table knows what the brand is about, and whether or not it it is the real McCoy. Without hesitating, I cannot think of any other brand of wristwatch which polarises opinion, and generates a conversation in the same way a Rolex does.

It’s personal really, for the lion’s share of my childhood and early adulthood, spotting those who wear a Rolex, with that reassuring crown at 12 o’clock, was the ultimate portable sign of achievement and success, whether on screen, in the movies or on one of my family friends’ wrist. I’ll caveat: being a child of the ‘80s, steel or occasionally gold and steel were the regular spot but all gold really was the king.

The investment market and waiting lists were, until the mid 1990s, utterly unheard of, with “big red” Daytonas and non date Submariners languishing unsold in the authorised dealers’ window for years in the ‘80s.

The Daytona changed all that in the 1990s: with clever marketing, restricted supply and unprecedented collector demand, Rolex became the most sought after watch in the world.

Fast forward to 2019 and the dramatic price rise of all Rolex. Any sports variety attracts a waiting list (demand far outstripping supply) and therefore the secondary market charges more for unworn examples than the high street authorised dealer does when they were bought new.

Commonly rumoured (and true, based on our recent sales) that steel Datejust models and attractively dialled Perpetuals are similarly commanding a premium, given there are none available  in the gold and green displays on the high street.

So where would the wise money go for an affordable Rolex? Above and beyond the recommended retail price? No. Instead, I’d suggest  a search for the smaller, overlooked and elder siblings of the Batman and Hulk. Lamentably, the days of a £1000 Air-King are long gone, however, given £3850 (at time of writing) buys the cheapest new 34mm Oyster Perpetual without a date, I’d suggest looking at a vintage alternative with a bit of cash left in your pocket.

For starters, the polarised opinion of the brand is more likely to slant to favourable, if the watch you wear is the same age (or a little older than) the wearer. Secondly, like all investments, if they don’t make them any more, then the supply can never possibly exceed the demand.

I’m not alone in citing the Rolex Air-King as the only watch that anyone ever needs, and that covers ladies or gentlemen. A 34mm case means you have the widest audience (should you ever choose to sell) and a practical watch for the beach or black tie. A Datejust is the Rolex that made Rolex globally renowned and picking a good one means a watch for life. Choose a  jubilee bracelet for elegance or an Oyster bracelet for rugged usability. Neither an Air-King nor a Datejust will look out of place in Piazza San Marco or in Central Park, and will be equally at home in your local.

Prices on both references are on the ascendance. However if you pick a good one, ideally with an attractive dial, box and papers, and you’ll benefit from everyday usability combined with a cast iron (well, steel /steel & gold) investment on your wrist. Likely as not, if it has been working for many years then it will continue to do so for years to come.

What would I buy? My choice would always be a steel Datejust with a steel Oyster or Jubilee. The first Rolex I ever bought new, for the princely sum of £1980 in the early 2000’s. Good ones retail for £4000 and more now. Thats an investment I never expected when I bought my indulgence. I’d also look at an Air-King or Air-King Date. They don’t make these anymore, not like they used to.

Panerai Radiomir

Special Editions For Jewellers

Panerai RadiomirFor a long time, prestigious jewellery retailers co-branded the watches they sold. Famously, Tiffany & Co would co-sign the Rolex, Patek Phillipe (and others) watches that were sold through the Tiffany & Co boutiques. Today such pieces command a premium for their rarity.

There are other rare pieces which were produced for jewellers. Here we talk about two such watches currently for sale at time of writing.

Panerai for Wempe:

Wempe are one of the leading Panerai retailers, and were amongst the first to seize upon Panerai ‘s relaunch in the late 1990s by becoming authorised dealers. When Wempe celebrated 100 years of being in business, it seemed a natural choice to commission Panerai to produce a limited edition range for this milestone. The watch for sale is a Radiomir, and one of only 125 made. Complete with certificate and all accoutrements, this really is an everyday limited edition which will distinguish the wearer.

Tudor for Harrods:

London’s  most recognisable department store is synonymous with green and gold. Tudor produced a special edition green bezelled and gold dialled Black Bay for Harrods, which was so popular it sold out instantly, and was reissued as a special edition with waiting list. Arguably the most attractive Black Bay, with a little echo of its Kermit and Hulk relative, the Tudor for Harrods is still one of the most in demand watches in collectors’ circles.

Tudor Heritage Black Bay

Tudor Heritage And Black Bay | The Rising Stars

Tudor Heritage ChronoTudor watches were, for a very long time, considered the poor man’s Rolex, and whilst the valid justification would once have been correct, as Tudor were the entry level sub brand for Rolex, things are very different today.

Arguably, 2012 was the game changing year for Tudor, with the introduction of the ETA powered Black Bay. Heavily inspired by the origins of Rolex and Tudor dive watches, with snow flake hands and maxi lume dial with deliberate patina, the Black Bay was an instant hit at an accessible price point, available with red, blue or black bezel. Subtle and not so subtle changes over the models lifespan saw a move to in house movements and deletion of the heritage Rose motif.

2013 saw the introduction of the Heritage chronograph blue, inspired again by a landmark heritage watch, the Monte Carlo. With two sub dials and a date function, the Heritage chronographs offer playful colours, heritage vibes and everyday usability.

While the market has slowly strengthened and prices firmed up, finding a cheap pre-owned Tudor is becoming harder. Nonetheless picking a discontinued ETA (mark 1 if you like) with smiling dial, Tudor rose dial and Tudor rose crown may be a prudent investment. Not long ago, late Tritium Submariners were priced wildly cheaper than their later superluminova brothers, now the mood is aged. Its unlikely Tudor will return to third party movements, so these are not to be repeated.

Similarly, the chronographs are in relative abundance in the secondary market and seem underrated at the moment . From an everyday versatility point, they are hard to beat.

Once upon a time, when asked for recommendations for good sports watches around £2-2.5k and under, the standard answer we’d give would be Omega Seamaster. Now, theres a very strong contender for best watch for £2.5k. And turning to Tudor means choice. Dive watch, what colour or retro chronograph? All of which look amazing on steel bracelets, Nato or leather.

Preowned Tag Heuer. A great Swiss Dive Watch From £500. But For How Much Longer?

preowned tag heuer 2000Its all too easy to focus on the obvious gems of the preowned watch market, but following recent conversations with leading motoring pundits, the words ‘bottom of the depreciation curve’ ring increasingly true in the horological world as well.

Not so long ago, the variety so called entry level secondhand luxury watches were fairly widely available, but with the increasing number of collectors and investors out there, even lesser known branded 60s and 70s chronographs and time only sports watches are hitting stratospheric numbers at auction.

If a dress watch isn’t for you, but you still seek a quality near vintage alternative to a Seiko or Citizen, then look no further than Tag Heuer.

Considering the starting point for a new Tag Heuer is a tad north of £1000, for less than half that amount (and par to a ‘designer brand’) a preowned Tag Heuer is well within reach.

preowned tag heuerAn illustrious manufacturer, early Heuer’s, the origin of the brand, are competitively sought after, with Monacos, Autavias and Carreras commanding late four figures and even in some rarer cases, into the five figure price point. Between 1985 and the early 2000s, Tag underwent the transformation of all transformations, resetting their target market from motor racing (and along with it, those evocative racetrack names) into the leading retailer of dive and sport oriented timepieces. Across the range, 200m water resistance became the benchmark along with some interesting and well thought out case designs, which today are deeply underrated.

The most successful ranges in era, are now in relatively plentiful supply in the secondary market. A pure dive watch design , the 1000, 1500 and 2000 ranges were best sellers, offering robust daily wearers, with a choice of steel, rubber, leather and bi-metal bracelets. Seeking out the more unusual dials is prudent, and should afford the wearer a long term investment as well as a desirable timepiece. The luminous 1000, red and military 1000 are already on the up. The 38mm cases may not seem contemporary but this is still larger than a Rolex Datejust and only marginally smaller than an Omega Seamaster.

Next up comes the Link. Chronographs command a premium but a good used Link can be achieved for well under £1000. A fish bone inspired bracelet sits comfortably on the wrist and is arguably one of the most robust daily wearers available, even today.preowned tag heuer kirium

Finally the marmite choice. The Kirium. Designed by Jorg Hysek, the Kirium was the premium Tag in era, but with changing fashions, is now eminently affordable thanks to being discontinued almost a decade ago. The Kirium was always the dressier option. Robust and stylish, Kiriums always look better on the wrist than in a box, and have aged well. Non chronos start from £300 and up. This does seem insane value when inflation is taken into consideration.

The smart money always goes on condition. We wouldn’t recommend buying the cheapest Tag out there, as clearly it will have seen use and being the watch’s last owner could prove costly. Spending £500 easily gets a 2000 or a Kirium, and a couple of hundred more gets a desirable dial option or even a chronograph.

The final box for ticking (in V&P’s eyes) is the connection. So here goes. Jason Bourne wore a Link, Barack Obama wears a 1500, The 2000 chronograph featured prominently in Die Hard 2, and Brad Pitt sported a Kirium in Moneyball.

Choosing Limited Edition Watches

omega speedmaster ultramanIt seems as if another limited edition, or numbered edition, watch is introduced every other month, and very much the case with Omega Speedmasters.

Whilst the variety and choice of limited editions may seem bewildering, there really is scope to select a statement piece which differs from other peoples. The two key drivers for acquiring limited edition watches, regardless of manufacturer seem to be :

Individuality. There may be endless productions of regular Speedys or Seamaster, but choosing an Apollo or Ultraman distinguishes the wearer as a connoisseur.

Investment and the investment potential is certainly clear, with a significant number of limited editions gaining in value aggressively over time, note particularly the Alaska project.

What to Look For When Choosing Limited Edition Watches

Firstly, we suggest looking  for a watch that the wearer likes first of all. After all, they are intended to be worn! Taste, whilst subjective, combined with uniqueness is a great start, ideally inspired by or tributing a classic helps.

Secondly, a limited edition which is exactly that. 5007, 10007 examples isn’t that limited really.

Lastly, a limited edition which means something significant and is attractive to other wearers.

We were fortunate enough to source, stock and sell two Ultraman Speedmasters “Speedy Tuesday”, both ticked all the above suggestions and priced sensibly, both sold swiftly and found tasteful and lucky new custodians.

The next element to add a little confusion to the mix is collaborations and customisations. We’ll leave in-depth analysis for both for other articles, but we will flag up the most attractive and unique collaboration, which is also a limited edition, and which we have sourced recently (and available for sale at time of writing). And shock. It’s not an Omega.

In 2019, IWC, collaborating with The Rake and Revolution magazine, launched The Pilot reference IW324019.

We are not going to plagiarise the beautifully written description of the watch when launched but to highlight a couple of quite unique features which answer our ‘how to choose’ recommendations…

iwc x the rake and revolutionThe IWC Rake is same dimensions as the original Pilot, which also uniquely has a bronze case which will patinate over time to be a properly unique piece.

The military green dial (the first green dial IWC) is stunning and perfectly embodies the military heritage of the Pilot. With a choice of three extremely high quality straps, the icing on the cake is the George Cleverly leather.

Made from 1786 (yes really!) reindeer hide, found in the seabed and preserved perfectly. The aroma of the leather is quite something, think 1950s sports car but better!

IWC X The Rake X Revolution is a limited edition of 150 pieces. Yes, they sold out promptly!

This is an attractive watch, of classical dimensions. Arguably, there is a return to classically dimensioned watches, this is pre-empting the trend.
