I’ve owned an Omega Speedmaster (or at least one Speedmaster) for the last twenty years. I’ve bought, been given, traded and sold Automatic Reduced models, vintage Moon watches, modern Moonwatches, Broad Arrows, as well as limited editions. Perhaps the rarest of all was one of 57 in yellow gold produced in commemoration of 50 years of the Speedmaster, but the white dialled Speedy Automatic which we sold recently was one I’d never seen in real life before, having only ogled Fratello’s site.
Speedy collecting is a dangerous thing. Arguably, any “Speedmaster Professional”, the first (“And only”) watch worn on the moon, visibly differs little today to the ones strapped to the astronauts’ arms. However, like all collecting, its the little variations which make all the difference. By no means, would this brief blog entry add much to the wealth of information on other sites, but I wanted to mention a couple of Speedmasters we have bought and sold recently.
I’ve mentioned the white reduced already because it was so perfectly complete. Similarly, the Apollo XI from 1999. Only viewing the case back shows that this is a limited edition. It shares the same dial and bracelet as the 1999 “regular” Speedmaster we have in stock (at time of writing). The ultimate stealth speedy? We bought and sold a lovely 1980s Speedy with long “S” and long “R”. Its not on our site, we sold it (like many others) before it was photographed, but see our instagram feed for a couple of shots. Perfectly simple, the font is engaging and the tritium was wonderfully creamed.
Earlier in the year, and last year as well, we sold various Alaska Projects, and other limited runs. The value of these editions has grown no end, have a look where they are now.
This years “Speedy Tuesday” limited editions are selling for (well advertised at least!) for almost double the list price.
Ed Whites and Straight written case backs command a premium, correctly so. Finding a good one is the challenge today.
The strange thing is, no matter how similar they may look, its the variation that appeals… I genuinely miss a number of watches I and we have sold over the years, but some of the Speedys more than most.
Vintage And Prestige Events are delighted to be exhibiting at Historics at Brooklands Autumn Auction of classic cars and motorcycles at their spiritual home, Brooklands Museum. The Auction viewing will take place on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd September with the auction commencing on Saturday 23rd September.
Following our first collaboration at Ascot Racecourse, in May this year, we witnessed the clear synergy between classic car enthusiasts and vintage watches, and will look forward to basing ourselves in arguably the historical home of British motorsport for a few days this Autumn.
Historics have successfully established themselves at Brooklands since the auction house’s inception. This auction really offers something for every enthusiast, incredibly curating in excess of 160 cars and motorbikes to go under the hammer.
The Historics team’s enviable knowledge of the market saw some splendid results at Brooklands earlier this year, and this time they’ve assembled a range of modern, prestige and vintage cars to entice even the choosiest of collector.
We look forward to seeing a number of classic Mercedes, Jaguar and Ferrari go under the hammer as well as some memory lane fast Fords, as well as a motorbike by Maserati. Should overnight accommodation be a concern, there is also a simply divine vintage motorhome on offer.
Vintage & Prestige will be exhibiting a select number of wristwatches from our collection, all of which will be for sale throughout the viewing and auction. We will be focussing predominantly on watches which come from the eras of the cars on offer, with a particular emphasis on “Modern Classics” given the number of amazing entries from the 1980s to present. Vintage & Prestige also curate and retail jewellery and accessories, and will have a selection of products from Cartier, Bulgari as well as designer jewellery and bags.
We look forward to meeting new as well as existing clients. From previous experience, we received a significant number of enquiries about watch valuations and sales. Should you wish to enquire about selling to Vintage & Prestige, or about your watch’s value, we would welcome contact prior to the event to allow us adequate time to appraise properly.

In May 2017, at Ascot racecourse, Vintage & Prestige partnered with Historics at Brooklands, the classic car auctioneer, to display a range of select watches and accessories.
This was the first time that Historics had held an auction at Ascot, arguably the most prestigious racecourse in the United Kingdom. With 174 classic cars and motorcycles going under the hammer, and an impressive sale rate, there really was something for everyone. From early Daimlers through to modern classics, and a tempting range of all star classics, such as Aston Martin V8s, DB6 (in “barn find” condition) as well as the loveliest Jaguar XK imaginable. There was also a strong offering of E Typer Jaguars and some stunning Ferrari from across the ages.
It would be hard to imagine a more stunning setting for one of our Vintage & Prestige events, and as workplaces go, this takes some beating. In our three large display cabinets, we displayed a range of watches from the past sixty years, mirroring the wonderful cars which we were surrounded by. We were delighted to receive visits from existing Vintage & Prestige customers and friends, as well as meeting many new. We experienced a strong level of interest in what arguably best partners vintage cars, our watches, as well as selling some vintage jewellery and collectors handbags; our clients recognising the value that pre-owned offers over new. We hope these gifts were well received, and feedback certainly demonstrates so.
It has taken a little time for V&P to report back on this successful event, but the memory remains strong, and the write ups in the classic car press fed back favourably. We have attached a couple of images from the event, and those that follow us on twitter, instagram and Facebook may recall these being posted in real time.
We do wish to thank all of our visitors, those who came to purchase or to meet us and learn about us. Equally thank you to those who came to ask for appraisals, and an understanding of the market we operate in. We hope we were helpful and we are very happy to offer these advices wherever and whenever time allows. This was a particularly busy event for us and we hope we were able to see all of those who kindly came to see us.
Moreover, huge thanks to Historics at Brooklands and their superb team for hosting us. The event was impressive to say the least and we thoroughly enjoyed supporting.
The next time Vintage & Prestige will be exhibiting is at Historics at Brooklands next auction, September 21-23. We will be writing further as well as announcing our line up for this event, which will be held at Brooklands Museum. If we can assist further at this stage, in terms of our exhibits as well as visiting information, please do let us know, info@vintageandprestige.com or 0208 0700 800. Please see www.historics.co.uk for more information about the event, at the time of writing, the consigned vehicles show a similar range on offer, all of which are tempting in the extreme!
Bit of an oxymoron that. Rolex Daytona are quite possibly the most desired watch in the world. Well known waiting lists, and regular celebrity spots has added to the myth of the Daytona. However, there is one Daytona that strikes us as ludicrously undervalued.
The bicolor/ bicolour Daytona, whether a 16523 Zenith movement or 116523 Rolex movement, trails its all steel and all gold sibling in the secondary market by some way. There are two methods for viewing this as a bargain and one way of securing the bargain.
The view 1:
Simply put, the new RRP for a Rolex Daytona at time of writing is £9100 (steel), £12400 (gold/steel) and £25550 (yellow gold) if you forgo a diamond dial.
Secondary price with papers & box (give or take a little) £8500-15k (steel), £7000-12k (gold and steel) and £15k to list for yellow gold. This ignores very rare dials, bezels etc.
The view 2:
For the average watch spotter, even the cheapest gold and steel Daytona will look like a twelve grand watch (at least). The recognition factor is there without the overt bling of the all gold.
The way:
If you have decided this is one bargain you can’t be without, choose a good one. We say this about all of our watches, and frankly, prize condition over papers. We just sold listed a Zenith 16523 in immaculate condition, without papers at £8295 and it sold in a day. A similar steel Zenith would have been listed over £10,000. There are some over used examples in the market, so be choosy, like we are.
And a final consideration, with these steel and gold versions, the choice of dial is also compelling. Opt for crisp white, elegant black, the glitz of gold, or stunning slate, or seek out a diamond dial or later series racing dial.
Happy hunting, we cannot see prices trailing the rest of the Daytona family for long.
Since 1978, Rolex have been the official timekeeper at Wimbledon. Possibly the most associated sponsorship in sports, the Rolex crown and clocks have become so embedded in the tennis championship’s televised coverage, it would be hard to imagine the timekeeping replaced by another manufacturer.
Rolex have strong associations with yachting, motorsports as well and we have considered what timepieces could add value to your summer wardrobe.
Rolex Submariner gold or gold & steel (reference 16613 16618 116613 116618) with blue dial and bezel: Arguably the best summer watch (for V&P’s Andrew) the blue dial evokes sun and sea, so this watch is perfectly at home on the water, in the water or propping up a bar near the water. Water resistant and durable, the gold Submariners exude practical glamour.
Take a simple Rolex Datejust in steel, and you are following in Roger Federer’s steps, as he was spotted with a Datejust II on many occasions, likely owning to his ambassadorship for Rolex. Upgrade to a vintage Daytona for the evening as he does.
Ignoring the Moon Watch, and opting for a special edition or limited production run, such as this Rattrapante, with split second timing, and you are master of the race track, or the school sports day. The carbon fibre dial looks superb au soleil.
Beach watches needn’t be limited to Casio or Swatch (As admittedly we recommend) . Picking a pre-owned Tag Heuer, such as this 2000 Exclusive with polished case and bracelet, and you have your mobile mirror to reflect the sun as well as a grey dive watch. One which, incidentally, is just at home in the evenings.
Take one vintage inspired dive watch, with modern day size, and you can evoke your own James Bond moment. This example is extremely keenly priced.
Need more inspiration? Give us a call, or subscribe to our Instagram feed… and please send us your holiday wrist shots, we always enjoy receiving these.
Whatever your choice, wishing you a sporting and enjoyable summer from all at Vintage & Prestige

I’ve already written about why I feel the Rolex Datejust is understated and under appreciated, and if you, like me, are quietly looking for Datejusts to use and enjoy, here is a simple guide. I’m going to split the choices into pre 1980 (vintage Rolex Datejust) and post 1980 – 2003 (recent) and ignore the 116234 and 116233 (to be covered later).
Often bought as a birth year watch, a good vintage Rolex Datejust will look much newer than it is, and are popularly worn with a leather or nato strap, given the early jubilee bracelet’s tendency to stretch. Original dials add value and were often swapped at service. Avoid any weird customisation, Mickey Mouse looks great at Disneyland but less so on a classic Rolex. After set diamonds are also a no no. I’m strangely OK with a well repainted restored dial, as long as its clearly stated when sold and bought for enjoyment. (I’m a sucker for a cool leather strap matching a dial), but don’t pay any premium. Originality will hold its value over all else.
Whilst the 16220 and 16234 reference are virtually indistinguishable at first glance, the 16234 held a decent lift in price when new. Today, the price lift is minor, and of course you gain a white gold bezel. I’d look for originality and condition first.
I’d buy (have bought and do buy) Datejusts on this basis only, and look for a box and papers second. Its still quite easy to find a mint 1990s and early 2000s Rolex Datejust with a jubilee bracelet which is little used and without stretch as well as an unpolished case. We currently (at time of writing) have a 1991 16234 which retains the green sticker on the back. This one genuinely is one of the best Datejusts I have seen. Go for gold and steel (the bi-colour or two-tone) and there’s a generous adding of glamour which can bring retro cool to your look. All gold is a rare thing, and a good 16238 I’m tipping as a strong investment piece.
